TLE Department launches Skills Expo
Bannered with the theme “Building a Brighter Future Through Technical Skills”. the TLE (Technology and Livelihood Education) department, led by Mr. George M. Pamittan, coordinator, launched an event called Skills Expo on February 19, 2016 at PSD Court “O”.
According to Sir Pamittan, said event was organized to showcase the skills being learned by students in different TLE areas such as electricity, carpentry, welding, graphic arts, dressmaking/tailoring, cookery, beauty care and computer hardware servicing.
Students proudly presented their projects, projects and skills to Mrs. Alicia E. Dela Peña, EPP/TLE Supervisor at the Pasay City Division Office.
To inspire students to excel in their chosen specialization, Ferdinand Vismanos, former valedictorian, now successful computer programmer and Nathaniel Edward Dimalanta, who has won in both national and global IT competitions, talked about their journey to success and how students may excel in the world of work despite their disability.
Dimalanta wins 3rd in tarpaulin designing
Nathaniel Edward Dimalanta, Grade 10 student, won 3rd place in the 2016 Division ICT Technolympics – Tarpaulin Designing category held on January 13, 2016 at AMA Computer College, Makati Campus, Makati City.
The event which carries the theme “A Showcase of Marketable Products, Performances, and Critiquing of Finished Products” aims to evaluate the skills acquired by pupils/students in various areas of specialization in all components of TLE/TLE. Dimalanta’s idea of marketable products was depicted in a design which he called “Ms. Golden Aura Prime Bakeshop”. According to him, cakes and pastries are marketable products especially when these are made with quality and are worth the consumer’s money.
Dimalanta, who is also the school paper artist, has won in both national and global IT competitions in 2014. He is being trained by Ms. Mary Maureen S. Alfon, computer education teacher.
PSD holds DAW opening ceremonies
The Deaf Awareness Week (DAW) opening ceremonies was held at the Philippine School for the Deaf on November 10, 2015. The event was joined by parents, SpEd teachers, concerned professionals, and hearing impaired pupils from various special schools/Sped centers in Metro Manila.
The theme dubbed “Making the Right Real: Promoting Inclusive Deaf-Friendly Communities” aims to raise awareness and consciousness on deaf persons and their important role in contributing to nation building.
The week-long activities included hearing tests by UST Center for Audiological Sciences and Better Hearing Philippines, employment talkshop, hearing awareness campaign, and health and wellness program for deaf persons.
PSD celebrates World Teacher’s Day
A simple yet heart-warming culmination of the World Teacher’s Day was held on October 5, 2015 at Court “O”.
The event commenced with a prayer led by Mr. Wilfredo Mendoza, high school teacher, followed by a welcome message by incumbent OIC, Ms. Ma. Jessica S. Magayanes, who spoke about the unique role that teachers play in guiding families, strengthening communities and building a nation.
With the theme dubbed, “My Teacher, My Hero”, the event included the recitation of “A Teacher’s Prayer”, special numbers from the PSD Advocacy Group and parlor games led by PTA officers.
Balasta, 1st place in the 2015 National IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities – Hearing Disability Category
Bryan Russel R. Balasta, Grade 10 student, bagged 1st place in the 2015 National IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities (Hearing Disability Category) held at the ICT Office, CP Garcia, Diliman, Quezon City on July 30, 2015.
Balasta competed in two different categories: e-Life Challenge, which tests the web browsing ability of contestants and e-Tool Challenge, which measures the proficiency of contestants on the use of Microsoft Office Productivity Tools such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
Winning in said competition made him part of the Philippine team which competed in the 2016 Global IT Challenge in Jakarta, Indonesia on October 25-29, 2015. Other members of said team who also won 1st place in their respective categories were from the Philippine National School for the Blind (PNSB), New Era University-Sped Center and NOH-SCC. They competed as one in the e-Creative category that tests the ability of students in story making and programming using a scratch program.
Balasta was trained by Ms. Mary Maureen S. Alfon, computer education teacher.
